4-H has a fabulous curriculum that was designed by Rutgers University, Explorers of the Deep. Our Forsyth County Center has been offering those workshops this week. There is one more opportunity at 5pm, Oct 19, 2022 at the Central Library. The focus is on the mysteries and adventures of ocean exploration—with robots! Ocean exploration helps scientists prepare for and adapt to changing ocean conditions. Many of these changes in ocean conditions are affecting the environment, such as melting glaciers, increasing ocean temperatures, declining fisheries and an increase in frequency and severity of storms. Since Earth is an ocean planet, these impacts affect humans and organisms all around the world, regardless of their proximity to the ocean.
What to expect? Experiential learning is always important to 4-H. Through a hands on lesson, we get our hands wet in a tub of water to experiment with ballast, density and buoyancy using a small scale glider prototype. The fun continues with a board game using our imagination to consider how the oceans have one connected conveyer belt of movement and how research helps us to better understand its relationship to us land dwellers.
Attendees will build skills in sensory experience, teambuilding and fine motor skills.
