The US Environmental protection Agency (EPA) has declared January as National Radon Action Month.
Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that can build up in homes and buildings. It’s the leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers in the United States, resulting in about 20,000 deaths annually.
The EPA and the Forsyth County Office of Environmental Assistance and Protection (EAP) encourage testing for radon in residential dwellings.
Discounted radon test kits are available year-round from EAP for Forsyth County residents. The price for short-term test kits is $8.50 each, including postage. Long-term test kits are also available for $21.50 each, including postage. They can be ordered by calling the local EAP office at (336) 703-2440 and will be delivered by mail after payment is received. EAP staff can help residents understand how to use the kits and how to interpret the results.
“Testing a home for radon is the only way to know if it is accumulating in the living space. January and the winter months are a good time to test for radon because we typically keep our doors and windows closed during the cold season”, said Forsyth County EAP Director Minor Barnette.
The cost of a remediation system to lower elevated radon levels in a home is typically around $1,500, on average.
