Local Sales Tax Referendum on the 2018 Ballot

The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners have committed to building a new Hall of Justice at a cost of $120 million. The current courthouse is unsuitable, and studies show a critical need for updated and expanded facilities to increase capacity and improve service. Counties have a legal responsibility to provide court facilities.

A vote “FOR” the sales tax referendum on November 6, 2018:

• An estimated $14 million in new tax revenues generated per year
• Does not apply to groceries or gas
• The cost is 1 extra penny for every $4 in purchases
• Paid by everyone who buys goods and services in Forsyth County, including both County residents and out-of-county visitors.
• The County Commissioners have committed a portion of the estimated $3 million in excess revenue to Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (likely for teacher salary supplements).

A vote “AGAINST” the sales tax referendum on November 6, 2018:

• Forsyth County property tax rate increased by estimated 3.1 cents per $100 valuation
• The cost is $46.50 for a $150,000 home
• Paid by Forsyth County homeowners, renters, real estate owners, and registered vehicle owners
