Blueberries are an excellent crop for our area and contain a wide array of phyto-chemicals which promote good health. Blueberries are very high in anti-oxidants and flavonoids. Blueberries have been shown to lower blood sugar levels which could be helpful to diabetics. Fresh berries contain vitamin C, A, E along with minerals such as potassium, manganese, copper, iron and zinc.
Certainly, eating fresh locally grown blueberries, a super food, is a super idea! Check out our website for a link to a downloadable pamphlet with the location of many blueberry growers in our area.
Be sure to buy extra and plan to freeze them for use later in the year. The best technique for freezing, which also works for many other berries, is to place the berries one layer deep on a cookie sheet or in a dish. Do not wash before freezing to keep the skins from toughening. Freeze the berries, and then pour them into freezer containers. Because unwashed berries freeze individually, they pour easily from containers in desired amounts. Remember to rinse frozen and fresh berries just before serving.
