Beginning with September 2013 vehicle registrations your vehicle property tax will be due at the same time your vehicle registration is due. The due date will be printed on the new combined renewal notice that you receive in the mail from DMV. In the current system, you are billed from the tax office 90 days after you renew or register your vehicle for your 12 month registration period. In the new system, taxes are due on the combined notice at the same time you renew your tag. These taxes are covering a different 12 month registration period and are to be paid to the N.C. Department of Motor Vehicles. This tax billing change may cause you to pay vehicle taxes twice on the same vehicle in less than 12 months but each tax amount represents a separate 12 month registration period. Only the date that taxes are due is changing with the new law.
Once your vehicle becomes part of the Tag and Tax Together program and you have received the combined notice, you will no longer be able to pay your vehicle tax at the county tax office. Payments to NCDMV may be made online at www.ncdot.gov/dmv/vehicle , by mail to the address listed on the renewal notice, or in person at your local license plate agency. The tax office will still handle value questions, appeals, and prorated refunds for the sale of a vehicle or a registration out of state.
