2012 Clover Classic 4-H Livestock Show Results

The inaugural Clover Classic 4-H Livestock show was hosted at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds by the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Forsyth County Center on March 17 and 18th. The temperature averaged about 68 for the two days, making it almost perfect, despite a few storms that rolled through in the evening. There were 224 head of beef cattle, sheep and goats from 97 different exhibitors (several exhibited more than one species of livestock) entered from 32 different counties. Sarah Jane French from Cumberland County, Virginia and Noah Henson from Haywood County North Carolina both earned a $50 gas card sponsored by Forsyth County Farm Bureau as a result of the being the two exhibitors that traveled the farthest distance to get to the show. There were 116 head of beef cattle, 44 goats and 64 sheep entered in the two day show.

A skillathon competition was held where the exhibitors had to answer multiple choice questions about livestock. For example: Of the following animals, which has a digestive system similar to humans? A. Cattle B. Swine C. Sheep D. Goats If you guessed B. Swine, you were correct!

Winners on both days received prizes sponsored by Mid-Atlantic Cattle Sales.

In the beef cattle show, Marcy Price of Johnston County was the owner of the Supreme Overall Champion Heifer with “Star” from the commercial heifer show and Reserve went to Bill Jones of Buncombe County with his Angus heifer Whitestone Enchantress. In the showmanship classes where the judge evaluates how well the exhibitor and the animal work together, Tyler Berrier of Davidson County was the 9-12 year old champion, Courtney Eudy the 13-15 year old champion and Alexis Eudy the 16-18 year old champion. The all three received water buckets filled with cattle products, snacks, a cattle keychain that were donated by Fulp’s Frame and Body and a trophy.

During Sunday’s sheep show, Abigail Wilson and Beverly Hampton both representing Lazy 5 Ranch emerged the Grand and Reserve Champion. Both girls, reside in Rowan County and also won their showmanship class. Kelsey Bentley of Johnston County won the 13-15 year old class. In the Meat Goat show, Cole Annas of Catawba County won both Grand and Reserve Champion with does named Flirt and Furney. Cole was also the winner of the 16-18 year old showmanship class. In the 13-15 year old class, Jessica Robinette of Guilford County was the winner and Abigail Wilson was the 9-12 year old champion.

All Grand and Reserve Champions received a picture frame that included a stamped genuine cow-hide matte and will receive a copy of their championship photo from CAB Studio. Sheep and Goat showmanship were both sponsored by Stokes County Farm Bureau and those winners also received water buckets with halter, animal care products, a keychain and a trophy.

We would like to thank our show chair, Mary Joe Hanes for the MANY hours that she put into the livestock show, as well as all the youth that show at The Hawk Farm that did odd jobs all weekend and helped to spread all the shavings that were donated by Hanks Lumber Company in Danbury.

On Sunday morning, an optional devotion service was held by Lisa Fulp of Fulp’s Frame and Body Shop in Lawsonville. Lisa taught the group how the fruits of the spirit can be seen everywhere in the livestock barn and how that is what makes the show successful. The Fulps were also a show sponsor and donated prizes to the show.

The NC Jr. Angus Association sponsored the Angus breed show prizes and the NC Jr. Hereford Association sponsored the Hereford breed show prizes. The Barn Loft Traegers brought a Traeger grill out for demo on Sunday and was sponsored by Saintsing Farms and Blue Q Ranch. Alpha Graphics of Winston-Salem donated the banner for the photo backdrop. Additional sponsors and donors include: Yadkin County 4-H, Yadkin-Davie 4-H Livestock Association, NC Cattlemen’s Association, Buffalo Creek Farm and Creamery, LLC of Germanton, Fall Hill Feeds of Walnut Cove, LTD Farm and Garden in King and Performance Livestock and Feed Company in Lawsonville.
